Why does the nozzle of a DTF printer get clogged? How to solve this problem?

2025-07-23
When using DTF printers, users may more or less encounter such situations: there is an urgent order, but the printer nozzle is blocked, which may cause uneven inkjet and affect the printing effect, or even make the machine unusable. So why does the white ink heat transfer machine get blocked? How to solve the problem of nozzle blockage?

Why does the nozzle become clogged?

The following are some of the factors that can easily cause nozzle clogging:

Ink quality issues

Poor quality or precipitated ink: White ink has high viscosity and high specific gravity, and is easy to precipitate. Poor quality ink is too thick or contains impurities or has an unstable formula, which is more likely to form lumps and clog the nozzle after drying.
The particularity of white ink: White ink contains solid particles such as titanium dioxide, which will stratify and precipitate if left standing for a long time, causing blockage of the ink supply system.

Environmental factors

Temperature is too high or too low: Temperature that is too high or too low will accelerate the volatilization of ink, causing the ink around the nozzle to dry and solidify. It will also cause the ink itself to evaporate, eventually causing its viscosity to increase and clogging the nozzle.
Dust pollution: The nozzle diameter of the DTF printer's print head is only micrometers, and dust in the air will directly block the nozzle.
Static electricity: The printer generates static electricity during operation, which absorbs dust and tiny particles in the air.

Operation and maintenance omissions

The nozzle is exposed and not moisturized: After using the machine, the nozzle is not returned to the ink stack, causing the ink to dry and clog.
Insufficient cleaning: The printhead is not cleaned regularly, and the accumulated ink dirt blocks the internal filter or ink channel.
Long-term idleness: If the machine is not used for a long time, the ink will stagnate in the pipe and the white film will precipitate, accelerating the risk of clogging.

Equipment system failure

The ink sac and ink tube are aged or the ink filter is clogged, resulting in poor ink supply.
Piezoelectric crystal fatigue or damage (this is common in printheads that have been used for more than one year) affects the stability of inkjet
Nozzles can also be clogged due to ink system problems, such as a clogged filter or a faulty pump that prevents ink from flowing through the nozzles.

What are the symptoms of a clogged nozzle?

When you are using a DTF machine, if the following situations occur, you need to pay attention immediately, as the print head may be clogged:
Poor print quality, such as streaks, uneven colors, missing lines, or blurriness
Some colors are missing, and blank areas appear in the printed pattern for unknown reasons
Ink leakage, slow printing speed
Frequent errors, distorted patterns, and inconsistent results from repeated printing

How can I prevent the nozzle from clogging?

Use high quality ink

Use high-quality ink that is compatible with your DTF machine. It is recommended to use original ink from the manufacturer, which has guaranteed quality and better compatibility with the device.

Clean the print head regularly

It is recommended to clean the print head weekly. Use a special cleaning fluid for the printer. If the printer is stopped for more than three days, deep moisturizing is required.
If the blockage is serious: you can remove the nozzle and use a syringe to inject cleaning fluid to flush in reverse until the sprayed water line is straight.
If the blockage is severe: soak the print head in the cleaning solution for 15-20 minutes, then use a syringe to pressurize and unclog it. If it does not work, replace the print head.
After each use of the machine, make sure the nozzle is completely returned to the ink stack before shutting down the machine to lock in moisture in a sealed environment. When the machine is idle for a long time, you can inject a special moisturizing liquid into the ink path instead of ink to avoid precipitation and solidification.

Use a humidifier

DTF printing works best when the humidity is between 40% and 60%. A humidifier can be used to maintain an ideal humidity level in the room, which can effectively prevent the ink from drying out too quickly.

Regular maintenance

Clean the ink system regularly and replace the ink cartridge when necessary. If other parts are found to be damaged, they should also be replaced in time. This can significantly reduce the probability of nozzle clogging. The ink sac (6-12 months) and filter (3-6 months) should be replaced periodically to prevent ink supply failure caused by aging.
